PRODUCTS

Pessoa
http://divoza.com/shop/a.visit/en

Visit this website to buy horsey stuff at sensible european prices instead of over-inflated english prices! fabulous price of £24.57 for a pessoa, the ONLY training aid I'm prepared to recommend. This personal recommendation is based solely on the positive results I witnessed while rehabilitating my own horse. It proved beneficial not only for strengthening his topline, but it also helped significantly with improving his own balance.

Solemates and Cleantrax
http://www.equinepodiatry.net
or contact Justine Jenkins, AEPUK Association Secretary, on justine@aepauk.org

My TB used the solemate pads while transitioning from shod to shoeless. They undoubtedly promoted a return of good structure in his feet, by providing the correct pressure & stimulus for growth during his handwalking period. I have also used Cleantrax to successfully treat chronic thrush, abcessing through the coronary band and white line disease.

Equine Elite Thrush Spray/Gel & White Line Relief Gel
http://www.equineelite.com/relief.html

Products used frequently by my partner on the horses he trims, with good success rates. Non-necrotising and easy to apply.

Simple Food Systems
http://www.simplesystem.co.uk

100% natural horse feed that is free from cereals, pulses, molasses, preservatives and additives. My own horses love the sun-dried lucerne from South Africa (yes, they're spoilt brats!), and thrive on the Total Eclipse supplement which is a blend of seaweed, linseed and brewers yeast.

Bachs Flower Rescue Remedy

Available from any good chemist, health food store, online or via a registered practitioner

I think this remedy is wonderful, and have always used it when my horses are upset over something or have had an accident in the field. I've also used it on both me and my horse prior to us going drag hunting, and on our first exciting excursions out after a long spell of box rest..... where I was wishing I had a velcro pad to join my jodphurs to the seat of my saddle!

I truly believe these gentle remedies are of genuine benefit, so if you would like to find out more please contact Nicola Bebb through http://www.bachflowerremedies.net or http://www.holisticequine.co.uk. Nicola is a fully qualified practitioner with a real passion for helping all creatures but especially horses and their owners.

Old Macs G2

Available online in the UK and from tack shops. I bought mine from www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk and received lots of good sizing advice from Lucy. I use them on my old Arab who recently had his front shoes removed. Personally I think they're brilliant as I ride over ploughed fields in them, have clambered over very uneven ground, jumped ditches and galloped up grassy hills in the rain without slipping once. I had problems initially with them twisting to one side, but this was because my horse's feet are very narrow. Once I bought a set of inserts the boots never twisted again. They are easy to put on, easy to hose off and haven't rubbed at all despite riding out on long hacks.

Boa Boots

Available online in the UK and from tack shops. I used these boots on a daily basis when both of my horses were transitioning from shod to shoeless. They are smart, well made and easy to put on and certainly helped prevent unnecessary trauma. However I found they rubbed a little around the coronet band if I rode for more than half an hour and also twisted slightly, despite the fact I was very careful to order the correct size. Please note though that these boots served me very well for the purpose I purchased them, and remained in excellent condition despite many miles on tarmac, gravel and larger stones. The cautionary note is really for people who want to use them on long rides and may not even apply as of course every horse is individual.

Aloe Vera Gel
http://www.aloevera.co.uk/horse1.htm

I buy this from my local health food store (be very careful to buy only products that are 100% aloe vera gel as some are not). I also know lots of people who use the 'Forever Living' products from the website above, which come highly recommended.

I always use the gel on minor wounds and skin irritations as it works really well and is entirely natural for use on yourself or your horse. Aloe Vera based skin products are said to be cleansing and moisturizing, aid in skin cell restoration, provide antibiotic protection and enhance healing. I have also occasionally used the pure aloe vera juice after a course of antibiotics, as it really helps to restore balance to your stomach.

Of course there is never any substitute for a correctly fitted saddle, and care should always be taken that you aren't compromising the fit of a saddle by the use of a pad that is too thick (like wearing chunky socks with shoes you'd normally wear with stockings!). However for those of you that do use a pad, especially if your horse (like mine) has a sensitive and/or previous back injury, then this one is highly recommended. A quick shake after use and its ready to mould itself to the next back its placed on!

which is a fabulous idea and a scheme in which both my horses are registered. Essentially I have left the ILPH a donation in my will, and in return they will collect my horses in the event of my death and ensure they are looked after for the rest of their lives. So I need never worry that they will end up in a dealers yard or worse still at the abbatoir.... unwanted, bewildered and frightened.
